A Story about Onsite... Every Software Engineer should read this

Every Software Engineer should read this.

 A Story about Onsite...!
One fine day, Vivek's PL Bhatia asks him whether he has any time for a small meeting. Vivek obviously has time and so the two go to a conference

room. Bhatia then clears his throat and says "Vivek, there is an on-site

requirement. It is in Covina , Los Angeles . It is for six months. I can

suggest your name. Do you have any problems?"

Vivek cannot believe his ears. Of course why should any one have problems

going to the Sam land. "Of course no Bhatia.. I have no

problems." he says.

Bhatia looks at him very kindly and says "You better draw up your personal

plans with your wife and let me know in a day or two" That's when Vivek

remembers that he has a wife. Then it strikes him that there is a himalayan

problem in front of him. Shobana is working in Wipro. She is in

the middle of a project in which she is a moduleleader. She cannot leave it

all and come to Covina with Vivek. On the otherhand it will be cruel on

Vivek's part to leave her here and go to Covina for more than half a year. Moreover,

they have just been married. Vivek can stay back. But one day he has to go..

He cannot stay back in India indefinitely. Project requirements are too

demanding. Shobana can resign Wipro and accompany Vivek. But what is the

guarantee that she would find such a nice job in such a nice company after they come

back from Covina ? So Shobana and Vivek discuss this issue. They reluctantly agree to get separated for six months.

Vivek hugs Shobana in the airport and says "I will be BACK" in a typical

Arnold Scharzegger tone and then boards Delta Airways leaving Shobana in

tears. In Covina Vivek gets lots of work and his stay gets extended by  two

more months. The days and months move very slowly. Vivek starts counting

even minutes.

During this period, Shobana's PL Ashish Mehta calls her one day and asks

her whether she has any time for a small meeting. Shobana wonders what

that meeting is.. They go to the conference room and Mehta tells her

about a great on-site requirement in Berlin , Germany for their customer.

"It is for six months and you are most suited person for this. I am

going to suggest your name. Do you have any problems?" Mehta asks her.

Shobana gets excited.. Berlin ! She has never been out of India . So she

instantly nods her head. Mehta then smiles and says "Okay discuss with

your hubby and let me know in a day or two"

That's when Shobana gets the gravity of the situation. It will be two

months before Vivek can come home..... By the time Shobana will have left to

Berlinfor six months. Shobana cannot decline this as this is an

important assignment. That night Vivek spends hundred dollars on

telephone to discuss this matter with Shobana. Finally they decide to go

ahead. Shobana breaks down in the phone and Vivek breaks down thinking

about his phone bill. And then Shobana leaves to Berlin .

One month after that,Vivek comes back to India . Then Shobana calls him

almost everyday and they discuss about all petty things on the phone.

Shobana applies for a loan to clear her telephone bills. Vivek gets into

a new project which is not yet started. His PL Prateek Ray calls him one

day and says that he has to go to Toledo Ohio for the requirement analysis

of that project. Vivek frantically says no. Shobana is arriving next month. He doesn't want to miss her. But Ray assures him that the work is only for one month and

that he would be back before Shobana comes to India . Thus Vivek flies to

Toledo Ohio and gets into the requirement analysis of the new project.

That's when he comes to know how difficult it is to retrieve information

from the users. You can design a system the user wants only when the

user knows what he wants. Vivek gets baffled by the questions his users

put..

"Do you think I need those fields "GMG_TYPE_HJHJ_TW" and

"Auto_level_ind"?What are they by the way?" The requirements analysis

stage continues for three full months at this pace. Shobana comes to India one

month after that. And she tells her PL that she doesn't want anymore

on-site assignments. "I understand" says Mehta and she desperately waits for Vivek to come back to India . It has already been two months over a year

since they last met. Vivek then gets the role of an on-site co-ordinator

for this customer. He calls Shobana that night and they really don't

know what to do. Shobana offers to resign her job and join him in Toledo . But

she is getting 21 grand per month in Indiaand Vivek doesn't want to lose

that. "Two more months Shobana and I promise I will be back" Shobana

retorts back, "There is no solution for this problem." Vivek gets

surprised. "What are you talking about?" he asks her. Shobana fights back her tears. "As long as I am in Wipro I will be getting a lot of on-site opportunities. Even if I

decline all of them, what about you? You also work for a software

company and there you need to go abroad almost once every quarter.

I cannot accompany you as you don't want me to resign my job here. Does

that mean we have to stay like this forever? Vivek! I love you and I

don't know how I spent fifteen months without even seeing you once. I

may not recognize you also if you come in front of me now... Tell me Vivek,

is there a solution for this problem?" Vivek doesn't speak anything for a

moment. He then realizes the truth in her sentences. It is a neverending

problem.

But what about the 20 grand she is getting per month?

"Vivek, is money everything? Can't we comfortably live with what you are

getting? Please Vivek, try to understand the situation" Shobana breaks

down. Vivek is still undecided. He married a software engineer with a

hope that with two incomes he would have a good deal of money to plan their

future."Let us face the reality, Vivek" Shobana says, "How much are you

paying for the phone calls now? More than 20 grand per month.

If I am with you there will your phone bill be so astronomical? Just

tell me one thing. Won't you be happy having me there with you?" Shobana

slowly turns hysterical. Vivek gets into the crux of the situation. It is true.

He has been spending around 600 to 700 dollars per month on India calls...

that is far more than what Shobana is getting then. He thinks and

thinks..for two days he does nothing else but thinking. Finally he decides that

he should have Shobana with him all the time from then onwards at any cost.

Shobana gladly prepares the resignation letter and submits it. Her PL

smiles and says "You've made the right decision Shobana..

congratulations  for the bold step. I understand your problems. Anyway! you have a three

months notice period here, right? We have a one month assignment in

Singapore ....."

MORAL : No software professional should marry another software professional.... unless one of them is ready to resign.

ONE BEDROOM FLAT...

ONE BEDROOM FLAT...
WRITTEN BY AN INDIAN SOFTWARE ENGINEER..
A
Bitter Reality

... As the dream of most parents I had acquired a degree in
Software Engineering and joined a company based in USA, the
land of braves and opportunity. When I arrived in the USA, it
was as if a dream had come true.

Here at last I was in the place where I want to be. I decided I
would be staying in this country for about Five years in which
time I would have earned enough money to settle down in India.

My father was a government employee and after his retirement,
the only asset he could acquire was a decent one bedroom flat.

I wanted to do some thing more than him. I started feeling
homesick and lonely as the time passed. I used to call home and
speak to my parents every week using cheap international phone
cards. Two years passed, two years of Burgers at McDonald's and
pizzas and discos and 2 years watching the foreign exchange
rate getting happy whenever the Rupee value went down.

Finally I decided to get married. Told my parents that I have
only 10 days of holidays and everything must be done within
these 10 days. I got my ticket booked in the cheapest flight.
Was jubilant and was actually enjoying hopping for gifts for
all my friends back home. If I miss anyone then there will be
talks. After reaching home I spent home one week going through
all the photographs of girls and as the time was getting
shorter I was forced to select one candidate.

In-laws told me, to my surprise, that I would have to get
married in 2-3 days, as I will not get anymore holidays. After
the marriage, it was time to return to USA, after giving some
money to my parents and telling the neighbors to look after
them, we returned to USA.

My wife enjoyed this country for about two months and then she
started feeling lonely. The frequency of calling India
increased to twice in a week sometimes 3 times a week. Our
savings started diminishing.

After two more years we started to
have kids. Two lovely kids, a boy and a girl, were gifted to us
by the almighty. Every time I spoke to my parents, they asked
me to come to India so that they can see their grand-children.

Every year I decide to go to India... But part work part
monetary conditions prevented it. Years went by and visiting
India was a distant dream. Then suddenly one day I got a
message that my parents were seriously sick. I tried but I
couldn't get any holidays and thus could not go to India ... The
next message I got was my parents had passed away and as there
was no one to do the last rights the society members had done
whatever they could. I was depressed. My parents had passed
away without seeing their grand children.

After couple more years passed away, much to my children's
dislike and my wife's joy we returned to India to settle down.
I started to look for a suitable property, but to my dismay my
savings were short and the property prices had gone up during
all these years. I had to return to the USA...

My wife refused to come back with me and my children refused to
stay in India... My 2 children and I returned to USA after
promising my wife I would be back for good after two years.

Time passed by, my daughter decided to get married to an
American and my son was happy living in USA... I decided that
had enough and wound-up every thing and returned to India... I
had just enough money to buy a decent 02 bedroom flat in a
well-developed locality.

Now I am 60 years old and the only time I go out of the flat is
for the routine visit to the nearby temple. My faithful wife
has also left me and gone to the holy abode.

Sometimes

I wondered was it worth all this?

My father, even after staying in India,

Had a house to his name and I too have
the same nothing more.

I lost my parents and children for just ONE EXTRA BEDROOM.

Looking out from the window I see a lot of children dancing.
This damned cable TV has spoiled our new generation and these
children are losing their values and culture because of it. I
get occasional cards from my children asking I am alright. Well
at least they remember me.

Now perhaps after I die it will be the neighbors again who will
be performing my last rights, God Bless them.

But the question
still
remains 'was all this worth it?'

I am still searching for an answer.................!!!

START THINKING

IS IT JUST FOR ONE EXTRA BEDROOM???

LIFE IS BEYOND THIS .....DON'T JUST LEAVE YOUR LIFE & PARENTS ........
START LIVING IT .......
LIVE IT AS YOU WANT IT TO BE ....... BCZ LIFE IS PRECIOUS!!!!

Top 10 Earth stories of the decade

Washington, January 1 (ANI): An article in Discovery News has outlined the top 10 earth stories of the decade.

The number 10 story is the soaring oil prices in 2008, when the sale of gas-guzzling SUVs and other fuel-inefficient vehicles plummeted in the United States in the face of expensive oil.

Huge amounts of money were funneled into alternative fuels and politicians rediscovered a verve for "energy security."

At number 9 is the story that the waters human beings and other animals depend on is getting demonstrably richer in estrogen-mimicking drugs, as well as BPA, flame retardants, phthalates, atrazine and many other chemicals.

The number 8 story is that the list of animals that are showing signs of evolving has been growing, providing a ray of hope that perhaps some species may adapt to and survive such challenges as climate change.

For example, invasive cane toads in Australia were found to have evolved longer legs at the beginning of their invasion.

At number 7 is the story that this decade has seen some species pushed over and others pulled back from the brink of extinction, while others are going invasive in new ranges.

The number 6 story is the Sichuan earthquake in China on May 12, 2008, which resulted in the destruction of both life and property.he 7.9-magnitude event was the strongest quake to rock China since the 8.5 Richter Magnitude Chayu event 58 years earlier.

The science of the quake and its thousands of aftershocks is still underway.

At number 5 is the great Sumatra-Andaman earthquake of 2004, which resulted in the devastating Indian Ocean tsunami that spread from Indonesia to the shores of East Africa.

The magnitude 9.1 temblor and the massive tsunamis that followed claimed close to a quarter of a million lives, making it one of the worst natural disasters in human history.

At number 4 is the most active Atlantic hurricane season on record in 2005, which saw hurricanes like Katrina, Rita and Wilma, probably a result of the warming ocean temperatures.

The number 3 story is that new scourges from the animal world have been steadily slipping into humans and beginning fresh attacks, most notably in 2009 with H1N1, or "swine Flu', but also with Avian Flu, SARS, and Monkey Pox.

At number 2 is the story that human activities have made oceans of the world more acidic, endangering marine ecosystems worldwide.

The number one story is that this past decade was the warmest on record, with glaciers melting much faster than ever expected. (ANI)

Dream Magic - How To Make It Happen...

You can definitely bring true love into your life, new friends, a better career, more wealth, and financial opportunities; resolve your life's problems and a lot more. It can in fact help you completely change your self image through a personal transformation once you know how to function in the secret and magical world you enter each time you sleep.

You do not need to spend a cent, no medicines or special dietary products, electronic gadgets or other equipment, you do not have to bond to any cult group nor participate in charity, and no periodical subscription neither. The only thing you need is YOU yourself only and an intensely felt and sincere desire to cause your life for change and to attract into your life those things you truly desire. On the other hand, it does require input from you, you must FOCUS and have the PATIENCE to persevere. It is also essential for you to TRUST that this magnificent process works as that is one of the main elements in achieving results. If you do not trust it in the beginning, you will trust it when you experience first rewarding and exciting success with it.

Here are the 5 Easy steps below. Follow the steps to change your life and attract true love, happiness, friendships and plenty more!

Step 1: What do you really want? Decide what you want in the simplest words, something that can be illustrated with the smallest amount number of words. Try to keep it less than 6 or 7 words if you can. For instance: You want to meet a companion or lover. Then you can say; "I am meeting someone nice", "I am getting a permanent relationship."; "I am marrying to someone nice". Beware that these sentences are in present tense or present continuous tense instead on future tense. Do not create a laundry list resume of what you desire, such as; I want a basketball hero, with a bachelor degree, must be from Harvard, must have a ranch in Virginia, must come from a rich family background. You should keep it short and to the basic inner emotional feeling that you can describe in the least words possible. And you can just let the spiritual channel fill in the details. The higher realm understands what you desire better than yourself.

Step 2: Turn it over! Right before falling asleep each and every night, you should sit on the edge of your bed for just a moment to collect the emotional feeling of what you desire to appear in your life or out of it. If you are looking for a mate, imagine the emotion when the mate is there already for you, your emotions and happiness of achieving your desired object. You do not need to picture what the person's appearance or what you will do or talk. That is not important at this point and interferes with the feeling emotions of your desire. You should just create the emotion of happiness you would feel at upon achieving what you are looking for. Then, with your imagination, put this happy emotion in a little bubble and blow the bubble away so it will enter the divine. At this stage you do not need have to 'hang on to your desire'. You are 'turning it over' to the greater reality beyond your understanding where it can be processed appropriately. Now you can go to sleep.

Step 3: Patience and Perseverance. Continue the nightly practice of 'turning over your desire' right before you go to sleep. If you miss a day, don't worry, but begin again. Never give up! Practice it every night until your desire becomes your reality. You will not know exactly how long your desire will be realized. For the person, it can be one night. For the person who waited a year, it did not matter since when her desire was realized, the time she spent patiently and persistently 'turning it over' every night became a moot concern. This step should not be over-emphasized. It separates from those who truly desire something and those who are just so-so interested.

Step 4: Trust! Trust that will happen! For the beginner, you must trust that the spiritual world can assist you in your desires and requests. But, you only need to trust until you have your first successful experience, then you no longer have to trust, because you will KNOW. When you know that something extraordinary happens, you no longer need to trust that it works, simply because you KNOW that it works. For instance, if I tell someone who has never tasted candy what candy actually tastes sweet, they would have to trust me. They have to trust me since they never had the chance to taste candy and do not know what sweetness is. Nevertheless, when they get to taste candy for themselves, they do not need to trust me about sweetness, they will know for themselves and hence trusting me is not necessary any more. That is how the Dream Magic works for you too, once you have experienced it yourself, you will KNOW what it is. And knowing is better than trusting.

Step 5: Change and Do. The universe is changing every second. The stars and galaxies are becoming farther apart because of the expansion of the universe. New Sun stars are born, while some others burn out, things are changing constantly. You need to make some little changes too. They do not have to be radical changes like getting a full body tattoo or dying your hair green and purple, but make some small changes as a signal to the universe that you are ready to change. What can you do? You can change your daily routine; instead of - wake up; breakfast, drive 30mins to work, then work, then eat lunch; Get off from work; stop at the grocery store, cook dinner, watch TV, read a little; then go to bed; next day start all over. Try something new like: first wake up; have coffee at a Starbucks; hitch a ride or take your friend to work; talk to someone you never talked to, after all you can make a new friend; you can eat lunch out at a different restaurant; finish work, go to a different grocery store, maybe a whole Oriental food supermarket or organic type; instead of watching TV, you can go to bookstore, swimming pool; beach; mall; bowling.

You can change your style of fashion or get something different than before; maybe its sandals, new hair color or change your colorist or hairdresser. You never go to the theater or a music concert? Then do that! If you are invited to meet someone new or do something different, do it! Come across some little things to change in your usual life. Why? Because that lets you to 'shake' and 'move your routine so the spiritual 'shakers' and 'movers' will be able to find more chances for you to intersect with a 'coincidence' that should turn out to be the reply to your desire.

Meaning of Namaste...

Indian Greeting Style Namaste Real Meaning

Meaning of Namaste | Indian Greeting Style Namaste Real MeaningThe gesture Namaste represents the belief that there is a Divine spark within each of us that is located in the heart chakra.

The gesture is an acknowledgment of the soul in one by the soul in another.

"Nama" means bow,
"as" means I, and
"te" means you.

Therefore, Namaste literally means "bow me you" or "I bow to you."

To perform Namaste, we place the hands together at the heart charka, close the eyes, and bow the head. It can also be done by placing the hands together in front of the third eye, bowing the head, and then bringing the hands down to the heart.

This is an especially deep form of respect.

Although in the West the word "Namaste" is usually spoken in conjunction with the gesture, in India, it is understood that the gesture itself signifies Namaste,
and therefore, it is unnecessary to say the word while bowing.

We bring the hands together at the heart chakra to increase the flow of Divine love. Bowing the head and closing the eyes helps the mind surrender to the Divine in the heart. One can do Namaste to oneself as a meditation technique to go deeper inside the heart chakra; when done with someone else, it is also a beautiful, albeit quick, meditation.

For a teacher and student, Namaste allows two individuals to come together energetically to a place of connection and timelessness, free from the bonds of
ego-connection.

If it is done with deep feeling in the heart and with the mind surrendered, a deep union of spirits can blossom.

Ideally, Namaste should be done both at the beginning and at the end of class. Usually, it is done at the end of class because the mind is less active and
the energy in the room is more peaceful. The teacher initiates Namaste as a symbol of gratitude and respect toward her students and her own teachers and in return invites the students to connect with their lineage, thereby allowing the truth to flow ” the truth that we are all one when we live from the heart.

So Namaste India...

10 PRINCIPLES

Stop and ask yourself today, "How do I really feel about myself?" Before you answer read these ten principles. Better yet, keep them before you daily.
********
(1) Never think or speak negatively about yourself; that puts you in disagreement with God.
********
(2) Meditate on your God-given strengths and learn to encourage yourself, for much of the time nobody else will.
********
(3) Don't compare yourself to anybody else. You're unique, one of a kind, an original. So don't settle for being a copy.
********
(4) Focus on your potential, not your limitations. Remember, God lives in you!
********
(5) Find what you like to do, do well, and strive to do it with excellence.
********
(6) Have the courage to be different. Be a God pleaser, not a people pleaser.
********
(7) Learn to handle criticism. Let it develop you instead of discourage you.
********
(8) Determine your own worth instead of letting others do it for you. They'll short-change you!

********
(9) Keep your shortcomings in perspective - you're still a work in progress.
********
(10) Focus daily on your greatest source of confidence - the God Who lives in you!

Everything happens for a good reason!...Destiny Exist...

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there…to serve some sort of purpose, teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be but you lock eyes with them, you know that very moment that they will affect your life in some profound way.
people come into your life

people come into your life

And sometimes things happen to you at the time that may seem horrible, painful and unfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming those obstacles you would never realize your potential, strength, will power or heart.

sometimes things happen to you

sometimes things happen to you

Everything happens for a reason. Nothing happens by chance or by means of luck. Illness, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity all occur to test limits of your soul.
Everything happens for a reason

Everything happens for a reason

Without these small tests, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless.

The people you meet affect your life. The successes and downfalls that you experience can create whom you are, and the bad experiences can be learned from. In fact they are probably the most poignant and important ones. If someone hurts you, betrays you or breaks your heart, forgive them because they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart.
people you meet affect your life

people you meet affect your life

If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you, but also because they are teaching you to love and open your heart and eyes to little things. Make every day count. Appreciate everything that you possibly can, for you may never experience it again.
someone loves you

someone loves you

Talk to people whom you have never talked to before, and actually listen. Let yourself fall in love, break free and set your sights high. Hold you head up because you have every right to.

Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you don’t believe in yourself, no one else will believe in you. Create you own life and then go out and live it.
Talk to people whom you have never talked to

Talk to people whom you have never talked to
“If you take your eyes off your goals, all you see is obstacles.”

The Mysterious Thing Called LOVE.

If you find yourself in love with someone
who does not love you, be gentle with yourself.
There is nothing wrong with you. Love just didn’t choose
to rest in the other person’s heart.

If you find someone else in love with you and
you don’t love him/her, feel honored that love came and
called at your door, but gently refuse the gift you cannot return, do
not take advantage, do not cause pain.

How you deal with love is how you deal with you,
and all our hearts feel the same pains and joys, even
if our lives and ways are different.

If you fall in love with another, and he/she falls in
love with you, and then love chooses to leave, do not try
to reclaim it or to assess blame, let it go.

There is a reason and there is a meaning.
You will know in time .

Give it back to the person who brought it alive in you.
Give it to others who deem it poor in spirit.
Give it to the world around you in anyway you can.

There is where many lovers go wrong.
Having been so long without love, they understand
love only as a need.

They see their hearts as empty places
that will be filled by love, and they begin to look at love as something
that flows to them rather than from them.

The first blush of new love is filled to overflowing,
but as their love cools, they revert to seeing their love as need.

They cease to be someone who generates love and instead become someone
who seeks love.

They forget that the secret of love is
that it is a gift, and that it can be made to grow only by giving it away.

Remember this, and keep it to your heart. Love has
its own time, its own seasons, and its own reason for
coming and going.

You cannot bribe it or coerce it, or reason
it into saying. You can only embrace it when it arrives and give it
away when it comes to you.

But if it chooses to leave from your
heart or from the heart of your lover, there is nothing you can do
and there is nothing you should do.

Love has always been and will always be a mystery.

Be glad that it came to live for a moment in your life.

10 Ideas to deal with Difficult Situations in Life

Many times we have to deal with difficult people in our workplace or even in family. Conflict ions in mind always occur between people. Views on same situation differ from person to person. We are humans and we have emotions and ego. When something like this occurs, it bothers everyone. How you handle those people who oppose your ideas? How you deal with them to maintain peace and

Here are some 10 ideas to Deal with Difficult People and situations:

1. Wait before responding: The opposing situations or incidents can make you emotionally charged and during this condition your response will only add oil to the fire. Although the opposing person triggers a response from your side but just wait to cool yourself and think before going. When we react instantly without thinking, we are actually giving them what they want. Avoid it.

2. Ask yourself:
Before responding to any situation, ask yourself two questions, “what is the worst thing that can result If I do not respond?“ and “what is the worst thing that can result If I do respond?” You will view the whole scenario in the answers of these two questions and find that nothing good will come out of reacting. It will create nuisance and a total waste of energy.

3. Forgive: Forgiveness is the biggest solution. When you forgive the concerned person, you will find that the situation is over and the chapter of hatred is finished in your mind. Life becomes again on an easy going way.

4. Avoid talking about it: People used to keep talking about your conflicting situations of life and you have to repeat the story again and again in front of all expressing your hatred towards that. Do not waste your energy on repeating the story. It will only disturb you and add more hate in your mind towards it. Avoid talking about it again and again.

5. Eliminate Negative People: Try to avoid negative people in your life. Unhappy people will want to bring you down emotionally, so that they are not down there alone. Squeeze any interaction with them. Try to be surrounded by people who have the qualities you admire: optimistic, peaceful and encouraging people.

6. Learn from them: Negative situations give some lessons to our life. Learn from them. Do not let them waste if they occur. Learn how to deal if this kind of situation occurs again in life.

7. Observe yourself:
Observe your thoughts, your views and the situation. It will keep you away from emotions. Instead of identifying with the emotions and letting them consume us, we observe them with clarity and detachment. When you find yourself identifying with emotions and thoughts, bring your focus on your breathe.

8. Relax your body: Try any workout or go for a swimming or a run to relax your body to release the negative and excess energy in us. Physical exercise is a good mean to clear your mind.

9. Write instead of speaking:
If you feel negative of some people or feeling disturbed of any opposing situation, express your feeling on paper. Write down all your views and feelings on it till the last bit of the situation remains in your heart and mind. Pour all your anger and hate over the paper. Now roll the paper and throw it away. You will feel better and relaxed. Try!

10. Go for light music: Music is a good remedy to wash out negative thoughts in your mind and give a soothing effect. Go for a light and some good music which you like. It will help you.

These are my points and my experience only. How you people cool down yourself in opposing situations of life? Any other good idea??

The 10 Worst Mistakes Career Changers Make

Changing careers is never easy. Half the world thinks you've lost your mind,
headhunters say you'll never work again and your mother-in-law steps up the old,
"I told you so" routine. But for many burned-out, bored or multitalented folks
who are sitting on skills they're not getting a chance to use, changing fields
is the only way to keep from losing their marbles.

Regardless of your career change strategy, never make these 10 mistakes

1. Don't look for a job in another field without some intense introspection.
Nothing is worse than leaping before you look. Make sure you're not escaping
to a field that fits you just as poorly as your last. Check out these self-assessment articles.
Get thorough information about the fields you're considering by networking,
reading and doing online research. Having informational interviews with alumni from your college,
colleagues, friends or family is a fun way to get the scoop on different fields.

2. Don't look for "hot" fields unless they're a good fit for you.
You wouldn't try to squeeze into your skinny cousin's suit,
so why try a field because it works for him?
People who are trying to help you will come along and do the
equivalent of whispering "plastics" in your ear. Instead of jumping at their suggestions,
take time to consider your options. Decide what you really want to do.
When you enter a field just because it's hot, burnout isn't far behind.

3. Don't go into a field because your friend is doing well in it.
Get thorough information about the fields you're considering by networking,
reading and doing online research. Having informational interviews with alumni from your college
, colleagues, friends or family is a fun way to get the scoop on different fields.

4. Don't stick to possibilities you already know about.
Stretch your perception of what might work for you.
Read some job profiles and explore career fields you learn about from self-assessment exercises.

5. Don't let money be the deciding factor.
There's not enough money in the world to make you happy if your job doesn't suit you.
Workplace dissatisfaction and stress is the number-one health problem for working adults.
This is particularly true for career changers, who often earn less until they get their sea legs in a different field.

6. Don't keep your dissatisfaction to yourself or try to make the switch alone.
This is the time to talk to people (probably not your boss just yet).
Friends, family and colleagues need to know what's going on so they
can help you tap into those 90-plus percent of jobs that aren't advertised
until somebody has them all sewn up.

7. Don't go back to school to get retreaded unless you've done some test drives in the new field.
You're never too old for an internship, a volunteer experience or trying your hand at a contract
assignment in a new field. There are lots of ways to get experience that won't cost you anything
except your time. A new degree may or may not make the world sit up and take notice.
Be very sure where you want to go before you put yourself through the pain and debt of another degree program.

8. Be careful when using placement agencies or search firms.
Do some research to be sure to find a good match.
Ask those who work in the field you're trying to get into or other successful career changers for suggestions.
Try to find a firm that knows how to be creative when placing career changers -- not one that solely focuses on
moving people up the ladder in the same field.

9. Don't go to a career counsellor or a career transitions agency expecting they can tell you which field to enter.
Career advisors are facilitators, and they'll follow your lead. They can help ferret out your long-buried dreams
and talents, but you'll have to do the research and the decision making by yourself.
Anyone who promises to tell you what to do is dangerous.

10. Don't expect to switch overnight.
A thorough career change usually will take a minimum of six months to pull off,
and the time frequently stretches to a year or more. Changing fields is one of
the most invigorating things you can do. It's like experiencing youth all over again,
except with the wisdom of whatever age you are now.

Thanks
